National Genealogy Conference, Big Money For Downtown Businesses

$1.3M Economic Boost Expected From Genealogy Conference

FORT WAYNE, IN – Genealogy enthusiasts are packing into the Summit City this week for the annual Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference.

The event is expected to bring an economic boost to the city. Visit Fort Wayne anticipates the 1,500 attendees to spend $1.3 million in direct spending.

This event is held in different cities across the nation each year. This year they picked Fort Wayne’s Grand Wayne Center to host the conference.

Fort Wayne is also one of three cities in the nation known for its genealogy center. It’s an exciting way for that local group to show off its home town. But it’s also expected to bring a boost to downtown, and Visit Fort Wayne credits more than just the conference center for attracting events like this to the city.

“With the two hotels that are so close. Parkview Field is right over our shoulders. There’s 20 restaurants within a two block radius. So it’s more the downtown package, is really selling to meeting planners around the Midwest and even across the United States,” said John Felts, Visit Fort Wayne.

There were several people already at the Grand Wayne Center Wednesday. More events are expected to begin Thursday. The conference runs through Sunday.
