All Boys Charter School Opens Downtown

First Boys Charter School Opens in Fort Wayne

The area’s first all-boys charter school held its first day of classes Monday.

The Smith Academy For Excellence has 80 students enrolled for grades six through nine.

Students come from all over the area, but the majority are from Southeast Fort Wayne. The school will hold classes this year downtown at St. John Lutheran Church. Along with focusing on academics, the Smith Academy will focus on building character in young men. Thomas Smith, the founder of the school worked for 30 years in Fort Wayne Community Schools, including many as a principal.

“this will be a new adventure for them and it will be a new adventure for us. We believe that with these young men, we’ll start a very positive improvement in their homes and in their lives, in their families and in their communities”, said Thomas Smith

The Smith Academy is being managed by teh same company that manages Fort Wayne’s Timothy Johnson Academy. The school plans to offer a sports program this year and hopes to add two grades per year until reaching K-12.
