Council Gets 2 Redistricting Plans

When the Fort Wayne City Council votes on its new districts this summer, most residents won’t have to worry about a change in representation.

Councilmen John Crawford, R- at large, and Glynn Hines, D-6th, unveiled two proposals Tuesday for the council’s six districts. The options are nearly identical, with the only variance being whether the 5th District should grow northeast or northwest.

In general, the new plans resemble the current districts with only slight changes around the edges.

The councilmen offered no changes for the 4th District because its population was already close to the city average.

Crawford said the lack of radical shifts was intentional, partly because it was easier and partly because voters just elected city officials last year. While the council members are legally required to represent those areas that elected them until the next election, Crawford admitted this can cause confusion…
