Club Soda Says Richards Bakery To Become….Bakery, and Catering Center

Club Soda Snap’s Up Richards Bakery

A popular jazz spot is looking to make some dough with the purchase of a bakery.

The owners of Club Soda have acquired Richard’s Bakery for an undisclosed sum, officials said.

Noelle Reith, owner and general manager of Club Soda, said Tuesday the jazz restaurant will shift its catering operations to the bakery, 1130 Wells St. Reith and her partners signed a two-year lease with the Henry family, previous owners of the neighborhood baked-goods shop. The Henry family was not available for comment.

“Customers won’t notice any changes right away,” Reith said, adding she and her partners will keep both businesses essentially the same. “It just gives us more space. We’re hoping to spruce it up a little, though, over time.”

Doug Kline is another owner of Club Soda, 235 E. Superior St. He said that after just a couple of weeks of ownership, he and his partners are “easing into” the bakery business.

“We’re food people,” he said. “Richard’s Bakery has been a traditional neighborhood bakery for a long time, and we plan on keeping it that way. Down the line, we may introduce a line of breakfast items.”

Club Soda spans 6,000 square feet, but Reith said the business could use the extra space. Owners of the jazz club will have the option of buying the bakery building at the end of the lease.

“It would allow our kitchen staff to concentrate on the restaurant and not have to worry about catering,” Reith said of the business that has 80 full- and part-time workers.

Club Soda caters business functions, weddings and similar events. Hors d’oeuvres, full entrees and desserts are among the offerings.

According to Richard’s website, Matt Henry, who is related to Mayor Tom Henry, and his brothers bought the bakery in 2004.
