The View of Progress & Notes From Me, Please Read

Even in a tough economic environment, a decade of planning is finally paying off.  With groundwork laid by the Graham Richard administration and continued by Henry’s, downtown is beginning to come alive.  From the expansions and renovations of the Grand Wayne Center to the central Allen County Public Library,  Harrison Square finally drawing closer to a finished product, and we can see the broader vision is beginning to take shape.

There is still a long way to go, but the AWB Condos are a great example of a new enviroment taking shape, a new urbanism taking place in Downtown Fort Wayne.  This is complete with new shops, fitness centers, restaurants, and a new wave of rental and condo housing.  We will soon have apartments and retail at Harrison Square, and its only a matter of time before an announcement is made by Indiana Tech regarding the New Law School.  The University of St. Francis has purchased the Scottish Rite, and plans to start new media oriented programs there drawing a large number of students there on a daily basis. The Auer center has opened, and is in the process of an expansion, while there is a project being discussed on turning ONE MILLION square feet of space into the city’s second high tech incubator.

The river fronts are long due for a major beautification effort, which has started with an iconic new MLK bridge.  The North River property proposals will start taking shape soon (hopefully), along with a current proposal from Science Central to expand their museum. Neighborhoods in almost every direction of downtown are undergoing revitalization projects. Citilink will complete a highly upgraded new transfer station adjacent to Baker Station and Harrison Square, and last but definitely not least is a major project to turn the embassy into a greater cultural magnet than it is today.

I’m sure I’ve left a few projects out, but I have to say their is a new era of change in the central core, and it smells great.  I started this blog to highlight the many great projects taking shape in Downtown Fort Wayne after the long absence of the “What’s Going Downtown” blog disappeared (much to my discontent).  Please leave comments on all articles.  Share you ideas, send me an e-mail telling me what you to hear about, write an article about your concerns which I’d be happy to publish, and most importantly, share this site with your friends, family, and coworkers.

To A Happy Healthy Progressive 2012 for Downtown and all of Fort Wayne!

I live downtown and while i took a walk around our lovely city today I noticed new development next to Columbia Street. Do you know what it is? Just wondered and couldn’t find any information on it.

Jason, I’m not sure what’s being developed in that area at the moment but I’ll be sure to try and find out.
